The Elephants
Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to see elephants up close. Its herds include some of the continent's remaining big-tusked bulls, and they have been studied by researchers for over five decades, making them some of the best-known elephants anywhere. Watching families bathe and feed in the swamps is a highlight of any trip.
Kilimanjaro Views
Africa's highest mountain rises just across the border in Tanzania, and from Amboseli you get the classic, unobstructed view. The peak is often hidden by cloud in the middle of the day. The clearest views usually come at sunrise and late afternoon, so plan your game drives accordingly.
More Wildlife
Beyond elephants, look for lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and hippo. The permanent swamps, fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro's snowmelt, attract hundreds of bird species, including flamingos, pelicans and crowned cranes.
Best Time to Visit Amboseli
- June to October: dry season. Wildlife concentrates around the swamps and visibility is excellent.
- January to February: hot and dry, with great game viewing and often clear mountain views.
- March to May and November: the rainy seasons bring green scenery, newborn animals and fewer visitors.
How to Get to Amboseli
Amboseli is around a 4 to 5 hour drive south-east of Nairobi, much of it on good tarmac. Scheduled light-aircraft flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport also land at the park's airstrip in under an hour. Amboseli combines easily with Tsavo West to the east and the Maasai Mara to the west, and it works well at the start of a trip down to the coast.

Can you see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?
Yes. Amboseli offers some of the best views of Kilimanjaro anywhere. Early mornings and late afternoons in the dry season give you the best chance of a clear peak.
Does Amboseli have the Big Five?
You can see elephant, lion and buffalo, and occasionally leopard, but rhinos are not normally seen here. Combine Amboseli with the Maasai Mara or a rhino conservancy for the full Big Five.
