How to combine a Kenya or Tanzania safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday: ideal trip length, flights, the best beaches and must-do Zanzibar excursions.

Dusty game drives in the morning, turquoise water a few days later. Pairing an East African safari with the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar is one of the most popular holiday combinations in Africa, and for good reason. It suits honeymooners and families, and it's perfect for anyone who wants to unwind after early safari starts.

Why Safari and Beach Work So Well Together

Safari days are thrilling but busy, with early wake-up calls and long hours in the vehicle. Ending your trip on the Indian Ocean gives you time to relax, swim and look back on everything you've seen. Zanzibar also adds something the parks can't: centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian and Indian history, spice plantations and some of the freshest seafood in East Africa.

How to Get to Zanzibar After Your Safari

  • From Kenya: direct flights link Nairobi and Zanzibar in around 1.5 hours, and there are flights from Mombasa too.
  • From Tanzania: short scheduled or light-aircraft flights connect Arusha, Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti airstrips with Zanzibar.

We coordinate the flights and transfers between your last safari camp and your beach hotel so the switch is seamless.

How Long Should You Stay?

A good rule of thumb is 4 to 6 nights on safari followed by 3 to 5 nights in Zanzibar. Three nights gives you time for Stone Town and one excursion. Five nights lets you truly slow down.

Choosing Your Beach

  • Nungwi and Kendwa (north): swimmable beaches at most tides and spectacular sunsets, with a lively atmosphere.
  • Paje and Jambiani (south-east): laid-back villages, famous for kitesurfing, with dramatic tides that reveal seaweed farms and rock pools.
  • Matemwe and Kiwengwa (north-east): quiet stretches close to Mnemba Atoll's reefs, great for snorkelling and diving.

Unmissable Zanzibar Experiences

Stone Town

Zanzibar's historic heart is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a maze of narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, bustling markets and rooftop restaurants. A guided walking tour brings its history of sultans, traders and the slave trade to life.

Spice Tour

Zanzibar is famous as the "Spice Island". Visit a working farm to see, smell and taste cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and black pepper where they grow.

Jozani Forest

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is home to the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on Earth, as well as mangrove boardwalks.

Safari Blue

A full day by traditional dhow in Menai Bay, with snorkelling, sandbanks, a seafood lunch on the beach and, often, dolphins.

Travel Tips for Zanzibar

  • Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages. Beachwear is fine at resorts and on the beach.
  • Zanzibar currently requires international visitors to buy its official inbound travel insurance. Check the latest requirements before you travel.
  • The main dry seasons, June to October and December to February, are ideal for beach time. The long rains usually fall from April to May.

Safari and Beach FAQs

Should I do the safari or the beach first?

We recommend the safari first. You'll be fresh for early starts, and the beach becomes the perfect way to relax before flying home.

Is Zanzibar good for families?

Yes. Calm, swimmable beaches in the north, family-friendly resorts and excursions like the spice tour and Jozani Forest make it great for children.
